Eclipse 2024: Partial eclipse seen in Scotland as most of UK misses out
Scotland was able to see a partial eclipse, whilst the rest of the UK missed out due to cloud cover.
A solar eclipse – when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, obscuring the view of the Sun from Earth – took place on Monday.
Millions of people had gathered across Mexico, the US and Canada to watch the total eclipse.
In the UK, clear skies in northern and western Scotland meant some could see the Moon obscure part of the Sun.
The next total solar eclipse visible from the UK will not be for another six decades – in 2090. The last one visible in the UK was in 1999. But a near total eclipse is expected in 2026, with about 90% of the Sun being obscured by the Moon.
