Some low maintenance options (Picture: Getty)
Looking after a collection of houseplants is no easy feat.
In fact, searches for ‘how not to kill your houseplant’ have increased by 180% in the last 12 months – according to a Google Trends report from Gtech.
But plants can not only be high maintenance, but expensive too – especially if you want to replace ones that didn’t quite make it.
Thankfully, there are a few that require a lot less upkeep and ones that are more budget-friendly, too.
Maybe you’ve been unsuccessful with your succulents, or perhaps you’re a plant parent beginner? Either way, the team at Gtech have rounded up the easiest and cheapest to keep alive – based on their cost and how frequently they need to be watered.
ZZ plant (zamioculcas zamiifolia)
An easy option (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto)
This plant thrives in low to medium light conditions and needs watering every 2-3 weeks – so there’s not a huge amount of work involved.
In terms of appearance, it’s known for having shiny, wide, oval-shaped leaves that shoot upward and quickly grow in a home indoors.
The ZZ Plant is also a cheaper option, coming in at around £10.
Sansevieria
Great for darker rooms (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto)
This plant is not fussy when it comes to sunlight so can be placed anywhere – just avoid direct sunlight.
So, if you have a darker room, such as an en-suite or hallway, this plant can brighten the place up.
It needs watering once every two weeks and likes plenty to drink – but with a £20 price tag, it seems like a very reasonable option.
Ponytail palm
Water every two weeks (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto)
This impressive plant does what it says on the tin: looks like a palm tree in the form of a ponytail.
While it likes to be watered on a consistent basis, it’s very forgiving if you forget now and again. On average, it’s recommended that you water a ponytail palm every two weeks.
This plant comes in all shapes and sizes, but the average price of a small plant is £20.

The monstera thrives in any environment, with or without sunlight, and it doesn’t require lots of water.
It’s also not very fussy about temperature changes – so it’s a pretty laid-back and low maintenance option.
It also has great air-purifying properties – so not only do they require little attention, but they also help your living space habitats.

Spider plants can put up with a lot – so are great for leaning parents – just be sure they get watered regularly (around once a week), but not too much so that the soil is really soggy.
Plus, with a £10 price tag, the spider plant is a budget-friendly option – either for yourself or a loved one.
