Billy makes a big discovery in the coming weeks (Picture: BBC / Jack Barnes / Kieron McCarron)
Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) could be in for a big shock in EastEnders this festive season, as he learns more about what exactly led to him facing a murder charge for a crime he did not commit.
The market trader, as viewers know, is facing a life in prison for the historic murder of Malcolm Keeble – the father of DCI Keeble (Alison Newman).
Phil (Steve McFadden) gave a statement to Keeble, corroborating claims that Billy was present during the historic warehouse shooting which claimed the life of her dad.
Billy, while innocent of the charge, was actually there on the evening in question – and had procured the firearm used in the murder.
Phil initially refused to throw his cousin under the bus, but with Keeble targeting Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and fictionalising charges to have her arrested, he was left with little choice but to do as the corrupt detective demanded.
Billy was therefore arrested.
Phil later left the Square in a bid to find something on Keeble – something to get Billy out of this mess, and he returned in recent scenes, evidently with a plan.

Billy, meanwhile, has had his attention elsewhere, after Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour.
Phil has his hands full over the festive season, after realising that Kat and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) have grown close in his absence, resulting in animosity between he and Kat.
More: Soaps
Kat confides in Alfie all about Phil’s antics, which she reckons have created a big mess. Alfie, however, comes to his love rival’s defence, arguing that even he’d want Phil in his corner if he was in trouble.
Billy, meanwhile, finally learns the whole story, and subsequently faces up to reality, making a big decision – all the while Phil is forced to take help from his nemesis.
One to watch: Monday January 2 at 7:30pm on BBC One.
