Good Morning, Switzerland!
Politics is leading the way on the global news coverage this morning, with Donald Trump considering a u-turn on suspending US military aid to Ukraine and EU leaders preparing for a special council on defence after French President Macron delivered a speech yesterday, saying Europe was at a turning point in history.
Zurich: Driver Sentenced for Filming High-Speed Rides
A 25-year-old man from Canton Schwytz has been sentenced to 36 months in prison, including 10 months mandatory confinement, for serious road traffic offenses. He filmed his driving escapades, reaching speeds of 220 km/h, with the videos serving as key evidence against him.
During the trial, the accused acknowledged the act and described a sense of euphoria derived from such high-speed driving. However, prosecutors pointed out that his criminal history also included possession of child pornographic and zoophilic content, further complicating his case.
The prosecution had sought a four-year prison term along with a six-year expulsion from Switzerland, arguing that the driver’s actions posed a significant public safety risk. His defense attorney advocated for a suspended sentence, claiming the defendant had learned from his mistakes and describing his possession of illegal content as “immature behaviour.”
Ultimately, the court’s ruling included a semi-detention order, allowing the driver to work during the day while serving his sentence at night. The judge deemed the traffic violations serious but found an expulsion would be excessive.
