Channel 5’s deep dive into Domino’s pizza exposed secrets behind the world-famous fast food brand including the fact that even the staff had no idea how the pizzas were really made.

Airing on Sunday night, Domino’s Pizza: How Do They Really Do It? went behind the scenes of the global phenomenon that introduced food delivery to the market and delved into their marketing and cooking tactics.

The network filmed inside the business’s many kitchens across the UK and visited the warehouses and production centres for the overall operation of the company.

At the factory, cameras caught up with members of staff – one of which explained even workers were kept in the dark about what made Domino’s dough so tasty.

Standing above the factory’s floor, a long-term employee admitted it was all in the base and shared that one secret ingredient set their pizza apart from the rest of the Italian staples being offered elsewhere on the market.

Panning to a sign on the wall that alerted any visitors to the existence of said secret ingredient, cameras showed viewers just how much of the process was really done by robots rather than human hands.

Elsewhere in the documentary, experts spoke on the history of the iconic brand and how its founders transformed a cheesy idea into a world-wide hit.

Revealing the chain was started by Tom and James Monaghan in a bid to pay off a student loan, one commentator noted: ‘It must have been a phenomenal treat for every age group.

‘It’s mind-boggling, they identified where students were living with high amounts of people in accommodation.

‘They knew there would be the same transport going backwards and forwards so they could triple drop, double drop to the scales of economy and I would imagine back then it was just unheard of – dialling up and getting a pizza delivered as simple as it sounds now’.

According to Channel 5, the show was a chance to gaze inside the ‘1,200 outlets in the UK’ and understand how they managed to supply ‘in the region of 100 million pizzas every year’.

Domino’s Pizza: How Do They Really Do It? is available to watch on Channel 5 player.
