Doja Cat’s song for the Elvis soundtrack is reportedly ineligible for an Oscar (Picture: FilmMagic)
Doja Cat is out of the running for an Oscar nomination following her track for the Elvis soundtrack, it has been claimed.
Earlier this year, the 27-year-old released Vegas for the biopic, starring Tom Hanks and Austin Butler, and it promptly soared up the charts around the world.
Thanks to the success, the Kiss Me More rapper found herself named among those who could expect a nod at next year’s Academy Awards, taking place on March 12.
According to reports, the song – co-written with producers Roget Chahayed and Yeti Beats – has been deemed ineligible for contention.
Variety reports that it was the only song from the film that was entered for consideration, but bosses decided to disqualify the track as it was interspersed with classic Elvis track Hound Dog, including the repetition of the lyric, ‘You ain’t nothing but a…’.
The rules reportedly state that both words and music must be ‘original, written specifically for the motion picture’, and should come ‘creative interaction between the filmmakers and the songwriters who have been engaged to work directly on the motion picture’.
Doja isn’t the only one who has been impacted, as the original score for TÁR is also thought to have fallen foul of Academy rules.
The score, by Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, was reportedly judged ineligible as a result of the amount of audible original music was insufficient.
‘A score shall not be eligible if it has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music,’ Variety reports that the rules state.

The Oscars nominations will be announced on January 24, so fans will have a while to find out what soundtracks managed to keep within the rules.
The glitziest night of the year will be taking place in March, with comedian Jimmy Kimmel set to host the proceedings.
He is no stranger to the ceremony, having already presented the awards in 2017 and 2018.

‘Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap,’ the late-night talk show presenter said of the news.
‘Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no.’
