    Diogo Jota dies latest: Liverpool forward killed in car crash

    • The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Diogo and Andre Silva, his older brother, in a car accident in Spain.
    • Jota, recognised for his nearly 50 caps with the national team, is remembered as both an exceptional player and an extraordinary individual by the football community.
    • A minute of silence will be observed before the Portugal women’s national team’s match against Spain to honour their memory.
    • Tragedy struck two weeks after his wedding day to long-term partner Rute Cardoso, which took place on 22 June 2025.
    • The accident happened at 23:30 BST in a Lamborghini that burst a tyre during an overtake and caught fire.

    Diogo Jota dies latest: Liverpool forward killed in car crash in Spain two weeks after his wedding

    The Portuguese football federation has paid tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically died in a car crash this morning.

    Diogo Jota reached the pinnacle of his football career for both club and country this season, winning the Premier League title with Liverpool and helping Portugal to victory in the final of the Uefa Nations League.

    He began his career with Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira and joined Atletico Madrid in 2016.

    Here’s the statement from the Portuguese Football Federation in full:

    “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are utterly devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva this morning in Spain.

    HEARTBREAK AS DIOGO JOTA KILLED IN CAR CRASH WITH BROTHER AT AGE 28

    “Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his own community.

    “On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players, respectively, performed.

    “The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to observe a minute of silence this Thursday before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.

    “We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy daily.”

    “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

    The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

    Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

    We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

    Fans are beginning to gather outside Anfield, laying floral tributes and paying respects to Diogo Jota at Hillsborough memorial. Most are still struggling to come to terms with the devastating news.

    The Portuguese forward was adored by Liverpool supporters – the song fans sang about him taking the Reds “to victory” has been one of the most popular on the Kop throughout recent years of success.

    The accident was just two weeks after Diogo Jota’s wedding day to long-term partner Rute Cardoso, which took place on 22 June.
