A pensioner called Dennis was pulled over by police after he went down a 70mph road on a mobility scooter.
The retired merchant Navy sailor was spotted zooming down a slip road towards the busy A38 in Mickleover, Derby, on an 8mph scooter on Tuesday.
Pictures show the moment officers pulled Dennis over to ask why he was travelling down the busy road.
He was taken onto the white zig-zag markings, just feet away from heavy traffic.
It is not known why Dennis attempted to scoot down the slip road, but the pensioner does apparently have 63 years of driving experience.
The slip road was closed to allow the mobility driver to turn around and travel back to safety.
Derbyshire Police said: ‘A call out to assist young “Dennis” who mistakenly thought he could roll down the A38 on a mobility scooter.
‘Despite driving for 63 years, travelling the world with the Merchant Navy and his mobility scooter having a max speed of seven knots we went to his rescue.

‘Thanks to our colleagues from Derby City Police for shutting the entry slip road so we could get Dennis to take a port side turn and travel contra flow.’
Social media has now nicknamed the pensioner ‘Dennis the A38 Menace’.
