Emma Corrin has revealed they needed a Marvel Cinematic Universe ‘debrief’ after signing up for Deadpool 3, calling Marvel’s intricate workings an ‘absolute mindf**k’.
It’s safe to say the star – who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns – was not shy about admitting they knew very little about the MCU and its origins in the comic book world.
The 27-year-old actor is set to play the villain opposite Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming movie, which recently paused shooting in the UK as the US actors’ union Sag-Aftra joined the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) on strike.
Portraying a baddie is a first for them and something they’re ‘really excited to do’ and an ‘itch [they] want[ed] to scratch’.
However, Marvel fans do not despair, as now the Golden Globe winner has been caught up to speed and grown to understand how the different movies and characters are linked, Emma thinks it is ‘amazing’.
The Crown star told Empire magazine: ‘Hands up, I’m not a Marvel person. I’ve watched Spider-Man and Black Panther. I was like, “Look, you’re gonna have to debrief me into this.”

‘It’s such an intricate world. There’s so much to it, it’s an absolute mindf**k. All the language and the Easter eggs, and this person is related to that person who did this, and this person came back and this person’s dead… it’s amazing.’
On the other side of all of that, Emma feels ‘really lucky’ to be part of the MCU because they understand ‘why it means as much as it does to so many people’.
They added: ‘It’s a phenomenon, and I feel really lucky to be part of it. Especially Deadpool, because I love the fact that it’s self-aware, and critical of its own inner workings.’
The My Policeman actor also shared that they were approached by director Shawn Levy after he saw them perform on stage, but was in the dark about the details of the project.

‘I’d heard about the project but, classic Marvel, they couldn’t tell me anything about it. Absolutely nothing. Zilch.
‘So I met him being like, “I don’t know what this is about”.’
Star and producer Ryan Reynolds officially announced Emma as a newcomer to the Deadpool franchise on Valentine’s Day this year, sharing a picture of them on Twitter.
Alongside the photo, the Hollywood A-lister wrote: ‘New addition to the family! The Deadpool family, for clarity. Which is just like a real family except with less swearing… Welcome, Emma Corrin!’

They join Hugh Jackman in the movie as well, who is making his hotly anticipated return to the role that launched his career over 20 years ago, that of Wolverine.
It’s also a part he officially retired from already (and put a pretty definitive ending to his story), but it just goes to show it’s hard to say no to Ryan Reynolds.
Deadpool 3 is currently slated for release on May 3, 2024.
