Deadly Mediterranean wildfires kill more than 40
Wildfires in the Mediterranean have killed more than 40 people – most of them in Algeria, and thousands have been evacuated.
The fires have caused significant damage to holiday resorts and villages.
Greece is preparing for more evacuation flights from Rhodes, as fires also rage on the islands of Corfu and Evia.
The European heatwave is not slowing down as temperatures are expected to rise above 44C in parts of Greece.
Wildfires have spread across Sicily forcing the Palermo airport to briefly close. High wind and tinder-dry vegetation mean it’s been hard for the fires to be put out.
Algeria has had the heaviest death toll so far – 34 victims including 10 soldiers were surrounded by flames during an evacuation in the coastal province of Bejaia.
