Labour MP Dawn Butler diagnosed with breast cancer
Labour’s Dawn Butler told the BBC she has undergone surgery after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Dawn Butler – MP for Brent Central, 52, was given the news in December following a routine check-up. She recently underwent a mastectomy at Royal London Hospital.
She had no signs or symptoms and the cancer was only identified following a routine breast screening.
“A mammogram saved my life,” she told the BBC. “Without a mammogram, my cancer wouldn’t have been discovered.”
After a follow-up biopsy, the politician was asked to see a surgeon the next day. It was at that moment she knew she had cancer, she said.
“It was so overwhelming,” she said. “The first thing I thought was, ‘I’m dying’. I thought, ‘I’ve probably got 24 hours to live’. That was my first reaction.”
Butler was told the cancer was contained in one area, and they should be able to “just remove it.”.
Butler’s mum and sister have both survived breast cancer and initially, she only shared the diagnosis with her partner and sister-in-law.
She will now be taking some time off to recover from the surgery.

‘Cancer caught early’
Ms Butler said in a blog post: “Back in early November, I attended a routine mammogram and a few weeks later the hospital informed me that they had identified breast cancer cells at a very early stage.
“Of course, everything stood still as it does when you hear the dreaded C-word – it is a shock but an early diagnosis means that it is something that I will get through and over.
“The NHS has caught my cancer early, the operation was a complete success, and I will make a full recovery.
“However, I now have to take time off work for my recovery.
“Everyone who knows me knows that I am a workaholic and I love what I do – but unless I listen to medical advice and recover well, I will not be able to give my best.”
Ms Butler thanked the NHS and “everyone who is soldiering through” with the health service “under enormous pressure”.
Butler’s staff will continue to support constituents while she is recovering.
