David Beckham was in the England camp offering tips on free-kicks to Trent Alexander-Arnold, although the Three Lions legend reckons the Liverpool star just needs to ‘keep doing what he’s doing.’
Beckham has been mingling with the England squad, with the current players delighted to get photos with the former captain.
Many will have been keen to pick the brains of the football icon, with Alexander-Arnold taking the opportunity to ask the free-kick master for any tips on striker the dead ball.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar explained how Alex Ferguson would help him out with his technique, if the Scot saw he was deviating from his normal routine.
‘When I was at United, Ferguson used to [help],’ Beckham told Alexander-Arnold, via The Liverpool Echo. ‘The moment he saw me off a little bit with either my run up or the smoothness of kicking it – he’d pull me back in.
‘He’d know exactly what I was doing wrong. So I just kept doing the same thing over and over again, never changed it.’
On where Beckham would be targeting, Alexander-Arnold asked: ‘Both sides?’ Beckham said: ‘Both sides.’
‘Not really [a preferred side]. I scored one against Jamo [David James] at Anfield where I whipped it over the wall and went the other side. To be fair, I liked both sides. Continuous. It’s important, it’s so important.’
Acknowledging that the technique is down to practice and repeating the same thing over and over, the full-back said: ‘It is yes, it’s routine and repetition.’
Beckham was certainly not trying to overhaul Alexander-Arnold’s technique, though, saying: ‘You’re obviously doing it – so just keep doing whatever you’re doing. Because you can cross a ball!’
