Dave Bautista revealed playing Drax wasn’t all fun and games (Picture: Karwai Tang/WireImage)
Dave Bautista has spoken *very* candidly about playing Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy.
While the former wrestler said he’s ‘so grateful’ for his Marvel gig, the star did admit ‘relief’ that the blockbuster franchise he stars alongside Chris Pratt in is coming to an end.
Bautista, 53, revealed: ‘There’s a relief [that Guardians of the Galaxy is over]. It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role.’
Speaking to GQ magazine, he elaborated: ‘I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him [but] the makeup process was beating me down.
‘And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy – it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.’
Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 is due to hit cinemas on May 5 and is expected to be the last in the series, which also stars Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper.

Next up for Bautista is a turn in M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin (Picture: Universal Pictures/PLANET PHOTOS)
Bautista recently got to try his hand at something a smidge more dramatic in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
The Rian Johnson thriller also starred Daniel Craig and saw Bautista take on the role of men’s rights activist and streamer Duke Cody, earning him favourable reviews.
Of course, prior to acting, Bautista enjoyed a successful in-ring career in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), gaining fame with his ring name Batista.
Since turning to acting in 2006, Bautista has gone on to appear in films including James Bond film Spectre in 2015, Blade Runner 2049 in 2017 and Dune in 2021.
Next up for Bautista is M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. The synopsis for the much-anticipated flick goes as follows: ‘While vacationing at a remote cabin in the woods, a young girl and her parents are taken hostage by four armed strangers who demand they make an unthinkable choice to avert the apocalypse.’
Sounds good, right? Bautista thinks so too. In fact, the A-lister revealed that the film’s script offered him the most dialogue he’s ever had.
He told GQ of the project: ‘It’s by far the most I’ve ever spoken in a film. Just huge pages of monologues.’

Bautista added: ‘We were shooting on film, which is very expensive. And we were shooting with one camera, so you don’t have the luxury of edits. It’s your only opportunity—you need a perfect take. It’s a lot of pressure. I want to remember my dialogue, but not at the expense of losing the emotion of the scene.’
Boy oh boy are we excited for this one.
