Dame Prue Leith was saved by a Sardinian fisherman after drifting out to sea during a ‘whole day of absolute misery.’
The Great British Bake Off judge was relaxing on the deck during a holiday on the Italian island when the trip took a bad turn.
The 82-year-old had been reading a book when she noticed the weather had turned gusty and the boat’s engine failed.
She explained: ‘I couldn’t start [the book] and the wind was getting up. I thought, “This has the makings of a really bad novel.”‘
The South African’s ship then began to travel out at sea and, despite Prue’s best efforts to call for help, she was stranded, alone, for an entire day.
She continued: ‘People would pass, not close enough to shout to them but close enough to wave and I’d be waving wildly and they just waved back, thinking I was just being friendly.’

Eventually, a fisherman noticed Prue was in distress and came to her rescue, but not before a strong scolding for being reckless.
She told the Mirror: ‘He was so angry with me. He said, “You tourists, you risk your lives. You could have drifted all the way to Corsica!”
‘And he just gave me absolutely blazes. And there was I sunburnt.’

Despite the drama, Prue said she was most of ‘thirsty’ having been left alone at sea, adding: ‘I’d had a whole day of absolute misery. But he was quite right and I was very foolish.’
Prue may have been taking a well-earned break from The Great British Bake Off, which she judges with Paul Hollywood.
