    US National Institutes of Health was “told to cancel” grant to group studying bats, Fauci says

    CNN says the National Institutes of Health cancelled a grant to a US nonprofit that was studying viruses in bats because it was told to, Dr Anthony Fauci said Tuesday.

    Speaking at a hearing Tuesday of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Texas Democratic Rep. Marc Veasey asked Fauci about the cancellation earlier this year of NIH funding for the EcoHealth Alliance to study bats in China and elsewhere.

    UK must prepare for second wave – health leaders

    BBC News says health leaders are calling for an urgent review to determine whether the UK is properly prepared for the “real risk” of a second wave of coronavirus.

    In an open letter published in the British Medical Journal, ministers were warned that urgent action would be needed to prevent further loss of life.

    The presidents of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, Nursing, Physicians, and GPs all signed the letter.

    Easing several rules at once could boost the virus

    The Guardian says the easing of multiple lockdown measures in England at once risks Covid-19 gaining a fresh foothold, scientists advising the government have warned.

    They raised concerns over the halving of the 2-metre physical distancing rule at the same time as reopening venues, saying the country was currently experiencing up to 4,300 Covid-19 infections a day and had no effective digital track-and-trace system.

    EU considering blocking US tourists over botched Covid-19 containment: US media

    France24 says EU nations may close their borders to US travellers as they seek to reopen their economies to tourism because of how Washington has handled the pandemic, The New York Times reported Tuesday, citing unnamed European officials.

    One official involved in talks among European Union members about who should be allowed to visit the bloc shared draft lists of acceptable travellers — Americans were not on them.

    Tracking Africa’s coronavirus cases

    Aljazeera says the outbreak of the new coronavirus has reached every nation in Africa, a continent of 1.2 billion people.

    As of June 23, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the continent stood at 8,339, with fatalities including the former President of the Republic of the Congo Jacques Joachim Yhombi-Opango and Somalia’s former Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein.
