    CNN says covid-19 has now infected more than 3.2 million people and killed at least 228,000 worldwide according to Johns Hopkins University.

    In the US, more than 1 million cases have been recorded and nearly 61,000 deaths. The US’ top infectious disease doctor says a second round of the virus is “inevitable.”

    PM to update UK on ‘steps to defeat’ the coronavirus

    BBC News says Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair a cabinet meeting later and then lead the daily coronavirus briefing for the first time since his return to work.

    No 10 said the PM, whose partner gave birth of Wednesday, will update the UK on the “fight against this disease and the steps we are taking to defeat it.”

    ‘Social bubbles’ of small groups could be the early step out of UK lockdown

    The Guardian says “social bubbles” allowing people to mix with a fixed small group of family and friends could be a part of easing the lockdown, Downing Street has hinted, but experts warned tougher the isolation and quarantining measures may be needed at the same time as any relaxations of restrictions. 

    Boris Johnson’s official spokesman signalled No 10 was open to the idea on Wednesday, saying it was “very alive to the issue of social isolation and the need for mental wellbeing.”

    UAE reports 549 new coronavirus cases 

    Arab News says the UAE government confirmed 549 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 11,929.

    Health officials likewise said that 148 patients had fully recovered from the diseases, with the total number of recoveries now at 2,329 state news agency WAM said.

    ‘Immediate danger’: Half of world’s workforce could lose livelihoods due to Covid-19, UN agency warns

    RT News says The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has warned that around half of the world’s workforce are at imminent risk of losing their livelihood because of the economic impact of the pandemic.

    In its latest report, the UN agency said those hardest hit by the financial effects of the Covid-19 outbreak have been ‘informal economy’ workers, including the self-employed and those on a short-term contract.

    Covid-19: How scientists are keeping politics out of the global race for a vaccine

    France24 says as the world races to combat the coronavirus, one nation is notably absent from the multinational efforts: the United States. But scientists say that for now, the international research community is working together to do all it can.

    Global actors are joining forces on multiple fronts to bring the pandemic under control. On April 24, the World Health Organisation (WHO) held a virtual conference to launch an international collaboration to accelerate the development and production of the health technologies necessary to do so. The US did not participate in the conference, which culminated in a joint call for action.
