More than 1,000 gather for rain-soaked Hong Kong rally
Arab News says more than 1,000 people rallied in the rin in Hong Kong’s financial district on Sunday.
A mix of young and old, wearing black and turquoise surgical masks to hide their identities and chanting slogans for democracy huddled together to listen to organisers speak on a makeshift stage.
“There may be fewer people. We all know that no matter how many people come out or how many times, the government ignores you,” said a 30-year-old woman who works in the legal sector.

US bombs pro-Iran militant group in Iraq, Syria in retaliation for rocket attack
France24 says the US has carried out air-strike against a pro-Iran militant group in Iraq. The strikes killed 19 fighters just two days after a rocket attack killed an American civilian contractor.
The Pentagon said it targeted weapons caches or command and control facilities linked to Kata’ib Hezbollah in Iraq as well as Eastern Syria, in response to a barrage of 30 or more rockets fired on Friday.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “we will not stand for the Islamic Republic of Iran to take actions that put American men and women in jeopardy.”

Somalia suicide car bomb attack rocks capital, killing scores
CNN says at least 79 people are dead and 149 people injured after a massive car bomb exploded at a busy intersection on the outskirts of Somalia’s capital, according to a government official.
Government spokesman Ismael Mukhtar Omar told CNN that the attacker drove his vehicle into a well-known junction that links the south of Somalia to the capital.
Omar added university students were among the dead.
The attack happened during rush hour in the Somali capital at about 8 a.m local time and civilians and soldiers are among the dead, police said.

Briton guilty over Ayia Napa false rape claim
BBC News reports a 19-year-old British woman has been found guilty of lying about being gang-raped in Cyrpus, by Israeli youths.
She had been arrested after withdrawing an allegation that she was attacked by 12 young Israelis in a hotel in July.
The woman says Cypriot police made her falsely confess to lying about the incident – the police deny all claims.
She was found guilty on a charge of causing public mischief and will be sentenced next year. She could face up to a year in jail.

Zac Efron updates fans after falling ill on new survival show
Sky News says actor Zac Efron recently fell ill while filming a survival reality TV show in Papua New Guinea.
Efron is reported to have been flown by helicopter for treatment in Australia after contracting a bacterial infection – possibly typhoid – while shooting his adventure series Killing Zac Efron.
The actor tweeted on Monday he was back home “for the holidays with my friends and family”.
