Iran’s Rouhani to visit Japan in hope of easing nuke impasse
Arab News says Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is visiting Tokyo to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday. The meeting is in hopes of easing a nuclear impasse between Tehran and Washington and reduce tensions in the Middle East. 
It will be the first visit in 19 years from an Iranian president and comes just before Japan is expected to announce a plan to deploy its troops to the region.
The troops will ensure the safety of Japanese vessels transporting oil.
Japan is keen to restore stability in the Middle East, the source of more than 80% of Japan’s oil.

Moscow shooting: At least one person killed near Russian intelligence HQ
CNN says at least one person has been killed after a gunman opened fire near the headquarters of Russia’s main intelligence agency in Moscow, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. 
At least five people were injured in the shooting near the building on Thursday. Two Federal Security Service (FSB) officers suffered severe injuries, one FSB officer was shot dead.
Social media footage from the scene captured the sounds of gunshots and screams as people fled the area.

Fresh clashes in India as death toll hit nine
France24 reports new clashes between Indian police and demonstrators erupted on Friday after more than a week of deadly unrest triggered by a citizenship law seen as anti-Muslim.
On Thursday, three protesters were shot dead taking the death toll to nine. 
The law makes it easier for persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries to get citizenship, but not if they are Muslims. It has led to fears that Modi wants to remould India as a Hindu nation, which he denies.

MP’s to vote on Johnson’s Brexit deal
BBC News says MPs will vote on Friday on whether to back Boris Johnson’s plan for the UK to leave the EU on 31 January. 
The EU Bill would also ban the government from extending the transition period – where the UK is out of the EU but follows many of its rules – past 2020.
Opponents say the bill leaves the UK’s future uncertain, and agreeing a trade deal with the EU could take years.

JK Rowling back woman sacked over transgender comments
Sky News reports JK Rowling has divided opinion on Twitter after she spoke out in support of a woman sacked for tweeting that transgender people cannot change their biological sex. 
Maya Fortater lost her job as a tax expert at the Centre for Global Development in March.
She was accused of publishing “offensive” tweets questioning government proposals to allow people to self-identify their own gender.
