Australians to protest as bushfires haze sparks health concern
France24 says thousands of people are expected to rally on Wednesday demanding urgent climate action from Australia’s government.
The current bushfire smoke choking the city has seen health problems spike.
Smoke alarms rang out across Australia’s biggest city on Tuesday with thick haze from bushfires burning along the country’s east coast. The haze forced buildings to be evacuated, school children to be kept indoors and ferries to be cancelled.
After weeks bathed in toxic smoke in Sydney, hundreds of blazes have raged across the countryside. Hospitals have seen a 25 per cent spike in people visiting the emergency department.

Although the service sector expanded 0.2% in the August-to-October period, that was offset by a contraction in manufacturing and a fall in construction.
The ONS said there had been “a notable drop in housebuilding and infrastructure in October.”

London Bridge victim’s father accuses Johnson of capitalising on son’s death
The Guardian reports the father of Jack Merritt, who was murdered in the London Bridge terrorist attack, has criticised the prime minister for treating his son’s death as a political “opportunity.”
As Boris Johnson sought to get his general election campaign back on track, Dave Merritt accused him of seeking to capitalise on Jack’s murder.
In an interview with Sky News, Merritt said: “What was required was just a dignified approach, whereby the politicians would express their regrets, express their condolences to the people affected and would then get on with campaigning in the election – it wasn’t an election issue.
“Instead of seeing a tragedy, Boris Johnson saw an opportunity, and he went on the offensive and started talking about extending the tariff for prisoners serving sentences with a maximum of 25 years.”
