Courtney Love says she was set to play a major role in Fight Club but was fired thanks to Brad Pitt.
The David Fincher flick, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, boasted a star-studded cast and is as popular today as it was when it was first released in 1999.
Starring Pitt and Edward Norton as the main characters, Helena Bonham Carter also has an important role as Marla Singer, the on-off girlfriend of Tyler Durden.
However that role was supposed to go to Hole singer Love before Pitt demanded she be cut – according to her, at least.
Love, who was secretly in a relationship with Norton on and off for several years, auditioned for the role and performed in front of director Fincher for ‘100 takes’ before being told she got the part.
‘I get this phone call. I get the role,’ she told Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.
‘The lawyers have called my lawyers. It’s my role… We did all these table reads, I’d gone over it more privately with David.’

Shortly afterwards, Love got a phone call from filmmaker Gus Van Sandt who wanted Pitt to play the recently-passed Cobain, with Love admitting she went ‘nuclear,’ telling them: ‘F*** you!’
She added that all these years later, she regrets ‘going nuclear’ rather than pretending it was fine and then ‘f***ing them later.’
‘Edward gets home, he starts sobbing. My landline rang at six. It was David Fincher – I knew it was gonna be him. And I’m like “don’t, don’t, don’t.”
‘And yeah, he fired me. Because I wouldn’t let Brad play Kurt.’
The role eventually went to Helena Bonham-Carter, who Love labeled a ‘genius’ (Picture: AFP via Getty Images)

She clarified of Bonham-Carter, who went on to get the role of Marla: ‘By the way, God bless Helena Bonham Carter, she’s a genius, but I’ve never seen that film.’
Years later in 2020, Love revealed, she had a Zoom conversation with Pitt again as his film company wanted to produce a biopic of Kurt, which she again shut down by admitting: ‘I don’t know that I trust you.’
‘If you don’t get me, you don’t get Kurt, and I don’t feel like you do, Brad,’ she told him.

The new claims comes after Love previously opened up on her friendship with actor Johnny Depp, saying he saved her life after she accidentally overdosed.
She revealed in a clip shared to her friend Jessica Reed Kraus’s Instagram that he had helped save her life and support her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, during her darkest time.
Love explained: ‘I don’t really wanna make judgments publicly, but I just want to tell you that Johnny gave me CPR in 1995 when I overdosed outside the Viper Room with Sal.

‘Johnny, when I was on crack and [daughter] Frances was having to suffer through that with social workers, wrote her a four-page letter that she’s never showed me, on her 13th birthday. He didn’t really know me.
‘Then he sent limos to her school when the social workers were crawling around – again, unasked – for her and all of her friends.’
