Joseph falls unwell (Picture: ITV)
Every parent’s worst nightmare is their child falling seriously ill, and in upcoming Coronation Street episodes Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) is terrified when Joseph (William Flanagan) starts having worrying symptoms.
When he complains of having a headache, Chesney (Sam Aston) brushes it off thinking it’s nothing serious. Gemma, however, is worried.
Deciding to keep Jospeh home from school she starts to think he’s showing signs of something that could be life-threatening and rushes him to A&E.
Although the news she gets on that occasion is positive, she’s not reassured, particularly when Joseph’s headache hasn’t gone away the next day.

Chesney insists his son should still go to school, headache or no headache, but once again Gemma overrules him and keeps Joseph at home with her and the quads.
Chesney is angry, but Gemma doesn’t want to take any chances with Joseph’s health. With him still complaining that his head hurts she leaves the quads with Abi (Sally Carman) and heads back to A&E.
Of course Gemma’s concerns for Joseph come amid concern for her brother Paul (Peter Ash), whose health is deteriorating as a result of him having motor neurone disease.

Paul is currently struggling as his symptoms worsen and he becomes especially concerned about a troublesome cough that won’t go away. He knows that his friend Shelly (Natalie Amber), who died recently, also had a cough in the weeks before she died.
Paul talks to his speech therapist about his concerns, and she quickly refers him to a specialist MND nurse. Paul then gets some devastating news – he only has 6 to 12 months to live.

Obviously this news will also have a massive impact on Paul’s family. Knowing that her brother’s illness began with relatively mild symptoms could well be playing on Gemma’s mind as she fears that Joseph’s headache could be a sign of something much more sinister.
