He is struggling (Picture: ITV)
Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) is a man with a lot on his mind in Coronation Street. Following a dramatic Super Soap Week in which Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce)’s numerous crimes were finally brought into the light, it was Peter who finally ended the killer’s reign of terror – by running him over.
Peter had turned the corner and seen Stephen holding a broken bottle to Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews)’s neck. Believing her life was in danger he floored the accelerator and headed straight towards Stephen, who was killed outright.
With Peter’s conscience already troubling him following the murderer’s death, things got even worse when he discovered from Audrey (Sue Nicholls) that Stephen had promised Jenny he wouldn’t hurt her.
The police have decided that they have no evidence against Peter and so they’re not going to charge him with killing Stephen. While this obviously came as a relief to Peter and his family, it hasn’t lessened his guilty conscience at all and he’s struggling.

Peter is, of course, a recovering alcoholic. The worry for his family is that the pressure he’s currently under will send him back to the bottle again.
In upcoming episodes Carla (Alison King) arrives back from her business trip to Spain. It’s not good news, as she hasn’t been able to secure the business that the factory urgently needs to stop it going under. She’s frosty with Peter, knowing that if Stephen was still alive there’d be a better chance to get back the money that he fraudulently took from the business.
A goodbye looms (Picture: ITV)
Ken (William Roache) is worried about his son and confides in Carla that he fears Peter may have started drinking again. They have a look around the flat and are concerned to find that a bottle of whisky Carla bought has gone missing. Has Peter taken it?
‘As we know Peter has been through a lot and there is no doubt that he will be tempted to drink which really would be a decision to kill the pain and kill himself through alcohol, he knows that,’ Chris Gascoyne explained.
