Izzy Armstrong made her return to Coronation Street tonight, three years after extended Coronavirus shielding.
Actress Cherylee Houston, who plays her, was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos, a rare connective tissue disorder, when she was 23. This meant that she faced an extended period of shielding from Covid and couldn’t film with her co-stars.
In 2021, we briefly saw Izzy in a storyline that highlighted the plight disabled people were facing trying to get back into working and protect themselves from the virus at the same time.
The narrative saw Izzy attempt to work from home and we also met her neighbour, played by Cherylee’s partner, Toby Hadoke.
The actress previously spoke about heading back to the ITV soap, telling The Mirror: ‘We did do some scenes from home, we talked about the possibility of that or me going back to a gentle start to ease me back in. They’ve just been really supportive’.
Tonight, she made her return to screen.
Izzy was seen in the pub talking to Gary about their son, Jake, but due to the recent ordeals Maria has faced on the council, he was distracted, far too worried about his partner’s safety to engage in the conversation.
While Gary remained his usual self, Coronation Street fans couldn’t believe it when they saw the beloved character pop up again.
‘Izzy’s back!’, one Twitter user said.
Another surprise Corrie fan wrote: ‘Lovely seeing Izzy back on the cobbles’.
Here’s hoping we’ll see her again soon.
