Raging fires in Corfu have turned parts of the island into ‘hell on earth’ according to tourists who are fleeing the affected regions in Greece.
Evacuations are underway on the islands of Corfu and Rhodes, as a meterologist warned that the world is at a ‘tipping point’ in the climate crisis.
Many British tourists have been left stranded after fleeing affected towns and villages, with hundreds left to sleep on the floor at Rhodes airport.
Some holidaymakers described being told to ‘run into the sea’ as the power failed and ‘air raid sirens’ sounded.
Now several major holiday firms, including Jet2, have cancelled upcoming flights to Rhodes, but with trips to Corfu currently going ahead, you may be wondering exactly which areas of the island are affected?
Let’s take a look.
Where are the fires in Corfu?
The country’s emergency communications service said several places in the north-east of the Ionian island were being evacuated as the blaze bears down.

Those in Viglatouri and the popular tourist destination of Nissaki are being told to evacuate now to Barbati.

It says: ‘If you are planning to travel to any areas affected by wildfires, please check with your travel operator or hotel prior to travel that the area you plan to visit.’
Can I get a refund?
You can contact your airline or tour operator to discuss your options, but they are under no obligation to refund you if you choose not to fly because of the weather. The same goes for travel insurance.
That said, Easyjet is one of the companies offering those wth flights to Rhodes to rebook – but this hasn’t yet been extended to cover Corfu.
