Christmas chocolate fans in shock after woman compares 2023 and 2009 Celebrations tubs

It just isn’t Christmas without a tin of chocolates to dive into; whether it be Celebrations, Heroes, or Quality Street.

But while Freddo prices have continued to grow, it feels like some of our favorite chocolate tins have shrunk.

    And now, we have proof.

As she compared the sizes of a 2009 and 2023 Celebrations tin TikToker, Deborah Lee Cowell asked, ‘Is this something to celebrate?’

When it comes to ‘shrinkflation’ — where goods reduce in size but not in price — and manufacturer Mars is among the brands hit the hardest.

Not only were 2009 Celebrations double the size of the current tin, they also used to contain a lot more chocolate, too.

The 2009 tub in Deborah’s TikTok weighs approximately 975g, making the 2023 600g tub seem tiny in comparison.

‘I remember when they were filled to the top with chocolates and you couldn’t see the bottom like nowadays,’ Deborah commented under her video.

Others couldn’t get over the difference between the two either, with one user predicting: ‘In a few years time, that will be even smaller.’

‘I stopped buying years ago but still crave them at Christmas,’ another admitted, while several other commenters sniped that this was ‘shrinkflation at its finest.’

And the worst part is that even with a much smaller tin, there’s still too many Bountys – although this year the divisive coconut treat could land you £25,000, so it’s not all bad.

Many are unhappy with the way classic Christmas sweet selections have got smaller over the years, but anger over the seemingly uneven distribution of certain flavours is nothing new.

Given what a household staple they are over the festive season, it’s no wonder we’re a little protective.
