China due to free vlogger who filmed Wuhan lockdown
The fate of Zhang Zhan, a Chinese citizen journalist imprisoned for her coverage of the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak, remains uncertain despite expectations of her release after serving a four-year sentence.
Supporters express confusion over whether Zhang Zhan has indeed been freed, as authorities are maintaining silence on her status, according to rights groups. The 40-year-old former lawyer was convicted of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” a common charge against activists in China.
Zhang is among several individuals who faced repercussions from Chinese authorities for their COVID-19 reporting, with some detained and others disappearing. Media watchdogs and human rights organisations have criticised her prosecution, citing concerns about her declining health and advocating for her release.

Reporters Without Borders advocacy officer Aleksandra Bielakowska said there is “huge concern” about Zhang’s safety.
“In China, journalists detained for their work often remain under detention or surveillance even upon completion of their prison terms,” she said.
“I honestly think we will have no updates soon. They will probably try to detain her in secret location, or keep her out of the eye sight for some time.”
