Cher has been flooded with messages of condolences after appearing to announce her mother’s death.
The Believe singer, who is typically active on social media, had been absent from Twitter for two days but returned in the early hours of Sunday morning to share the news of her mother Georgia Holt’s apparent death at the age of 96.
In a simple tweet, she wrote: ‘Mom is gone,’ alongside a sad face emoji.
Cher, 76, did not disclose any other details or a cause of death, but it comes after the pop icon revealed in September that Holt had been battling health issues.
She tweeted at the time: ‘Sorry I’ve Been Mia. Mom’s Been Sick Off & On. She Just Got Out Of Hosp. She Had Pneumonia. She’s Getting Better.’
The following day, Cher reassured fans, writing: ‘Home is the Best Medicine For Her…She’s Getting Better.
‘Thank All Of You For Your Prayers.’
After appearing to share news of Holt’s death, Cher was flooded with messages of support and tributes from fans.
CSI: Vegas actress Marg Helgenberger wrote: ‘Oh @cher I’m so very sorry to hear that your beloved mother has passed. My heart goes out to you. What a blessing to have had her in your life for as long as you did. May she rest in peace.’
One fan, whose own mum recently died, commented: ‘Oh Cher, I am so sorry for your loss. You two were so much fun. Time doesn’t heal this wound, it helps reshape it into comforting memories that make the grief tolerable. Keep honoring the memories.’
Another added: ‘I am soooo sorry momma!!!! She’s a special and one of a kind woman!!!! I love u both sooooo much and am here if u need to talk!!!!’

Passing on their support, one other fan posted photos of Cher and Holt together and said: ‘Omg, oh Cher, I’m so very sorry, she is at peace & pain free now she’s so special & amazing, my heart is breaking for you I’m sending all my love & prayers & comforting hugs to you & family, I’m always here for you no matter what, we all are, I love you both so much.’
Holt herself was a singer in her earlier years and began by singing on an Oklahoma City radio station when she was six, before joining bandleader Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys by age 10.
She also went on to make several TV appearances in shows such as I Love Lucy and The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet.
In 2013, Cher executive produced the Lifetime documentary, Dear Mom, Love Cher, about her family history.
Holt was married and divorced six times; she wed her first husband John Sarkisian, Cher’s father, again 19 years after their divorce and he became her fifth husband. She was said to have been in a relationship with partner Craig Spencer until her death.
Through Cher, Holt has two grandsons, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.
