Firefighters in Greece continue to battle blazes on popular tourist islands. The effort continuing a week blazes first erupted on the mainland. Temperatures in the country are expected to come down from tomorrow, but strong winds continue to pose a problem. Firefighters in host of countries around the Mediterranean have been battling blazes including in Croatia, Portugal and Italy. FRANCE 24’s Jennie Shin reports

On July 12, the landmark Nature Restoration Law was adopted in a cliffhanger vote at the European Parliament. Our guest, prominent Finnish MEP Heidi Hautala – who’s one the parliament’s vice-presidents – says she is “relieved” that the EU parliament now has a position to negotiate with the member states. She applauds the law as “step towards combating climate change”, and decries what she calls the use of “fake news and disinformation” by far-right as well as right-wing parties on the nature restoration issue. Hautala also praises the EU parliament’s recent approval of the corporate due diligence directive, saying “companies must unlearn old bad habits”.

In 2022, Spain was the country in Europe worst hit by forest fires. More than 300,000 hectares went up in smoke in almost 50 separate fires. Due to drought and global warming, the Spanish government has decided to start this year’s prevention plan a month and a half early. Across the nation, regional governments, which each have their own firefighting unit, are preparing for the risk of blazes. Our correspondents report from the southern region of Valencia.
