Do you have what it takes?
The adult cam-girl industry is worth billions, with more websites and services popping up every week.
In theory, all you need is a webcam and a strong internet connection to get started. But what’s it actually like to do ‘camming’ for a living – and what do you really need to know?
Two experts tell all on the most recent episode of Smut Drop – on our weekly sex podcast with host Miranda Kane.Revealing the truth about their often misunderstood job, Cam girls Rachel Lee and Lucy talk about how they made it and now help others make it in the business.
For a start, says Rachel, they want to make it clear that while we’re often led to believe that online sex work can make you thousands each day, the reality is a little different.
‘A lot of girls are sold a dream’, she explains. ‘They sign up for websites and are told they’ll earn a grand an hour if they just get on with it. But camming is hard, there are good days and bad days in terms of money. One day you’ll take £200, on another it might just be £50. That’s the nature of the industry.’
Many women, such as new mums, use cam-work as a way to ‘top up’ income over the course of a few hours.
Camming uses a sort of tipping system, where viewers can splash extra cash if they think the performance they’ve seen is worth it. Each session takes place in a virtual ‘room’ but, if things get hairy, an escape is just a click away.
Requests, say Rachel and Lucy, can vary from the weird to the wonderful. Winnie the Pooh, dinosaurs and cardigans have all featured in performances.
Rachel Lee and Lucy Lucious have revealed all about their often misunderstood job
Lucy, who goes by Lucy Luscious online, tells the podcast: ‘Days are never the same, it’s certainly no 9-5.
‘You can even sleep and earn money during the night.
‘I’ve put my laptop on a couple times and people will log in to watch me sleep. I did £80 the other night after snuggling down in my bed with my laptop on.’
While sex work such as camming might be considered a ‘degrading’ profession by some, Lucy – who started camming during the Covid pandemic – says it couldn’t be farther than the truth. At 46, she she’s more confident than ever before, she tells Miranda.
‘Men half my age tell me I’m beautiful,’ adds Lucy.
Models can earn between £250 and £2,000 a week as earnings are uncappedYour income depends on your hours, some girls fit in a couple hours of work while others perform all day
You don’t need to use your real name. Many models use an alter ego or wear different clothing or make-up than they would in real life. If becoming a cam girl through a reputable company, your personal details and location will always be protected.
No means no. Each ‘room’ is your own and you don’t have to complete every request. If it’s something you don’t feel comfortable with then tell the client you can’t carry out the act.
You don’t need to be entirely naked. While a lot of clients will be looking for this, it’s not a requirement.
Get as high quality a camera as you can – 1080p at least. Websites such as cammingpro have more suggestions.
Be yourself, clients will enjoy the experience more if you are enjoying your self as well.
‘I’m two separate people. When I’m online, I’m Lucy Luscious with make-up, a wig and all this confidence. When I’m not working I go by a completely different name and throw on some tracksuits. It’s like a split personality.’
In the episode Rachel explains that she decided to set up a cam girl agency in a bid to create a safe environment for all the women who work for her. Calling her business Regency, she explains that while she does take a 20% cut of their earnings, in return she offers practical support and advice ahead of each session. Camaraderie is key, she says.
Rachel continues: ‘When I started doing this I signed with an agency that wasn’t that great. I was quickly horrified by some of the realities of camming and thought to myself “I can do this on my own. I can help girls earn money while still feeling safe.”
Clients have asked for all manner of requests – from fluff-based fetishes to food fantasies
‘Your morals are your own – if you don’t want to do something then say no. We’re quite strict with that. It’s your room – your rules. If you do something just for the money then you’ll feel terrible after.
‘We hold your hand all the way through this process. When you start, it can be the most daunting thing in the world. But once you do it once and rip off that bandaid, it’s fantastic.’
