BTS star Jin begins his military service
The oldest member of the K-pop band BTS has started his military service.
Jin, 30, posted a photo of him with his new military haircut before he enlisted on Tuesday. “It looks cuter than I expected,” he said.
Military service in South Korea is still required as South Korea and North Korea are still technically at war.
Jin has begun five weeks of training at a Bootcamp near the North Korean border. After completing his training he’ll be assigned to a frontline unit.
Bootcamp for K-pop star
At the Bootcamp Jin is enrolled, recruits sleep on mats on the floor in rooms with 30 people. They are taught how to handle weapons and fire live ammunition before being put through demanding wartime scenarios.
After training, Jin will be stationed near the North Korean border. He will have to prepare for the cold winter as snow begins to fall and temperatures plummet.
He is set to spend 18 months in the military. It had been speculated the band members may get an exemption from service due to the band being considered the country’s biggest-ever cultural phenomenon – BTS sells out stadiums around the world and dominates the charts.
It is believed the group will reunite around 2025 after all seven members of the band have completed military service.
