British No.1 Cameron Norrie has sent a message to fans who booed him at Roland-Garros on Wednesday as he eliminated another Frenchman in Paris.
Norrie booked his place in the third round of the French Open with a dominant 6-1 6-3 6-3 victory over qualifier Lucas Pouille – a former world top 10 player.
Norrie, ranked world No.13, beat Benoit Paire in his opening match at the Grand Slam tournament and next faces Lorenzo Musetti or Alexander Shevchenko.
If Norrie gets past 17th-seed Musetti or Russia’s Shevchenko in the last 32, it will mark his best ever run at Roland-Garros, and he is hoping that the French crowd will now start to get behind him after he was booed during his win over Pouille.
‘Sorry to take another Frenchman out, but hopefully you can support me in the next one!’ Norrie told the Court Suzanne-Lenglen spectators.
‘I feel good, there have been ups and downs recently but I have a great team around me.
‘We really want to play well at the Grand Slams, it’s nice for me to win today and I definitely improved my game and performance from the first round and definitely enjoyed the match more.’
Norrie also paid tribute to Pouille, who has overcome struggles with depression and alcohol in the past 12 months.
‘All credit to Lucas, it’s great to see him back enjoying his tennis,’ Norrie added.

‘I actually played him five years ago here at the French Open so it’s nice to be back and sharing the court with him. It was a tough battle, tough to get over the line.’
The 27-year-old is the last British singles player left standing after Dan Evans and Jack Draper lost their opening matches – with no British players in the women’s singles after several stars crashed out in qualifying and Emma Raducanu injured.
