The Brit Awards announced their line-up of nominees on Thursday, but fans were not pleased to see the exclusion of female musicians from the artist of the year category.
Only male nominees have been shortlisted for the honour, which adopted a neutral approach in 2022.
During the London-based annual ceremony, crowds will instead see Fred again.., Central Cee, George Ezra, Harry Styles, and Stormzy compete to be named the best British artist as female musicians didn’t get a look in.
Music fans shared their outrage at the news on social media and were quick to point out the absence of any female nods.
One wrote in block capitals: ‘NOT ONE FEMALE ARTIST BEING NOMINATED FOR ARTIST OF THE YEAR???? wtf is the brits anymore x [sic]’.

Another echoed their thoughts by saying: ‘Every single nomination at the Brits for artist of the year is a man?’
‘You must be having a laugh because where are all the female artists????’ another fan questioned, before adding: ‘There hasn’t ever been a time where it’s been all female nominations for top artist, and it most definitely does not work both ways.’

Others expressed their disappointment in general at the nominations list and contemplated where combining categories in an attempt to make things more inclusive was the right way to go.
One Twitter user penned: ‘Very disappointing brits nominations 🙁 [sic]’ while another wrote: ‘So females singers how has the @BRITs scrapping the Best Female Solo Artist award worked out for you? Any nominations in that gender neutral category? NO FEMALE NOMINATIONS Well that didn’t take long. [sic]’
The artist of the year category was introduced last year after the awards combined the previously split recognitions – British female solo artist and British male solo artist – into one selection process.
