Breaking – update
The Supreme Court has ruled the government’s plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda as unlawful, in a major blow to Rishi Sunak.
LIVE – Breaking – Supreme Court Rwanda ruling- Court rules Govt’s Rwanda plan UNLAWFUL
The Supreme Court is set to decide whether the UK can send asylum seekers to Rwanda.
The plan is designed to deter people crossing in small boats across the Channel, but since it was announced it has been thwarted by legal challenges.
It had been a major part of Rishi Sunak’s promise. The ‘stop the boats’ policy was one Sunak inherited from the Boris Johnson government. Sunak has made it a top priority.
However, critics argue the ruling will do nothing to deter people from trying to reach Britain.
The High Court had ruled it lawful, but the Court of Appeal overturned the decision.
The decision comes two days after PM Sunak sacked Suella Braverman from her role as home secretary. In a scathing letter, Braverman accused Sunak of “magical thinking” and said because of Sunak, even if the plan is lawful, the government will “struggle to deliver” the policy.
