Canadian police have said they have pulled out of a remote northern town after an intensive manhunt after a search turned up no sign of two fugitive teenagers suspected of killing three people.
The suspected fugitives are suspected of killing a college professor, a North Carolina woman and her Australian boyfriend.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) used dogs and drones, helicopters, boats and even a military Hercules aircraft to scour the area around York Landing, Manitoba.
But so far they were unable to confirm a possible sighting of the two men reported by members of a neighbourhood watch group.
The RCMP tweeted Monday that “the heavy police presence in York Landing has been withdrawn & policing resources in the community will return to normal.”
The fugitives have eluded the massive police presence by creating multiple bogus trails. Apparently, according to local Canadian media reports, they have gone ‘dark’ and are only using cash to make purchases.
It has also emerged that McLeod, 19, and Schmegelsky, 18, were chased and stopped by Split Lake First Nations safety officers in Manitoba last week after they drove through an alcohol search checkpoint. But the teenagers had not yet been named as suspects.
That shifts the hunt for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky back toward another remote town, Gillam, where a vehicle that had been used by the suspects was found burned last week.
Meanwhile, the families of the three victims have all released statements expressing their deep grief and asking for privacy.
