Brazil election: Lula and Bolsonaro to face run-off
Brazil’s election is heading into a second round which will see the left’s Lyiz Inácio Lula da Silva face far-right Jair Bolsonaro.
With almost all the votes counted, Lula had won 48 per cent against Bolsonaro’s 43 per cent – a smaller margin than opinion polls had expected.
But Lula still had less than the 50 per cent of valid votes needed to prevent a run-off. And voters have four weeks to decide which of the two should lead the country.
The two candidates are complete opposites and much is at stake. They are arch-rivals and spent most of the campaign slinging insults.
In their final TV debate before the vote, Bolsonaro called Lula a thief, whilst Lula quipped Bolsonaro was a madman.
