Boy and girl arrested for murder of teenager Brianna Ghey
Two 15-year-olds – a boy and a girl, have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the stabbing death of a 16-year-old girl at a park in Warrington – a town which sits between Liverpool and Manchester.
Brianna Ghey was found by members of the public at Linear Park in Culcheth, Cheshire, on Saturday.
Emergency crews were called just after 15:00 on Saturday after she was found lying on a path with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The teenagers arrested are from the local area.
Cops are not treating the stabbing death as a hate crime.
Det Ch Supt Mike Evans said a number of enquiries are underway and police are trying to establish the “exact circumstances.”
“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that the circumstances surrounding Brianna’s death are hate related,” he said.
“Patrols have been stepped up in the local area and officers will remain in the Culcheth area to provide reassurance and address any concerns that residents may have.”
The exact cause of death will be released when the post-mortem examination is completed. Officials are supporting Brianna’s family – who are from the nearby town of Birchwood.
Officers are searching for the weapon and the motive for the attack.
There will be extra officers patrolling the area.
Police have urged anyone with information or evidence related to the incident to come forward and contact police.
Police in Warrington are asking people and businesses to check CCTV and dashcam footage.
