The body of an ER doctor who disappeared after an overnight shift was found on Tuesday, police said.
Dr John Forsyth’s body was found in a body of water in northwestern Arkansas, after going missing over a week ago.
The body was discovered by a kayaker on Tuesday afternoon, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office said. The missing doctor had a gunshot wound, but the sheriff’s office has not confirmed if it was self-inflicted or fired by another person.
The missing doctor’s identity and cause-of-death will be confirmed after an autopsy, but investigators informed Forsyth’s family about his suspected death on Tuesday night.
Forsyth worked as an emergency room doctor at a hospital in Cassville, Missouri, located about 20 miles from the state’s border with Arkansas.
Forsyth was last seen on the morning of Sunday, May 21 as he was leaving his overnight shift at Mercy Hospital. His last known communications were a series of texts sent to his fiancé.
He was first reported missing by the hospital when he failed to show up for his next shift, that Sunday night at 7.00pm.
‘This is very unusual for him,’ his brother Richard Forsyth told local station KOLR 10. ‘This is a punctual man who has never missed a day of work in his life.’
Investigators were able to find his car partially hidden in the parking lot of the Cassville Aquatic Center, located less than a mile from the hospital. The car was left unlocked, with his keys and wallet found inside.
Investigators also searched the RV Forsyth stayed in while he was working long shifts at Mercy Hospital, which was parked in the building’s parking lot. They found two cell phones belonging to the missing doctor.
Law enforcement agencies began a large manhunt in the area, using police K9 units and drones to search a 9-mile radius from the aquatic center.
Forsyth’s family is still searching for answers about his mysterious disappearance and death. He was described as a loving father of seven children.
He had recently finalized his divorce on May 11, and had gotten engaged only days before his disappearance, his family said.
