Bank boss among missing in Sicily yacht disaster
Six people, including prominent figures from the finance and legal sectors, are missing after a luxury yacht sank during a storm off Sicily on Monday. Among those unaccounted for are Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer from Clifford Chance. UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah are also missing.
The 56-meter yacht, Bayesian, was carrying 22 people when it capsized about 700 meters off the coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello. Fifteen people, including a one-year-old British girl, were rescued. The body of the yacht’s cook has been recovered, and a search operation continues.
The yacht sank at around 5:00 AM local time after a severe storm caused waterspouts. Reports suggest that Lynch, known as the “British Bill Gates,” had invited members of his legal team aboard to celebrate his recent acquittal in a high-profile fraud case in the US. His co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain, had died in a separate incident just days earlier.
Chris Morvillo, one of the missing, is known for his work on high-profile cases, including Lynch’s recent trial and the 2001 World Trade Center attack investigation. Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old chairman of Morgan Stanley International, is also missing. He also serves as the chair of the insurance company Hiscox.
The search continues as Italian authorities work to locate the missing passengers.
