Chelsea have paved the way for Tottenham to sign Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson after pulling out of the race to sign the striker.

The 22-year-old was identified by Mauricio Pochettino as a solution to Chelsea’s problems in attack.

With Christopher Nkunku out until December, Nicolas Jackson is the only recognised centre forward at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have looked goal-shy in their opening three Premier League matches and Johnson would have added some much needed help for Jackson.

But, after registering their interest with Forest, Chelsea subsequently pulled out of the race to sign the Wales international.

Sky Sports say that decision was down to Forest’s £50m asking price for Johnson, which Chelsea deemed excessive.

That decision has left Tottenham alone in the race to sign Johnson after Ange Postecoglou signed off a deal for the forward.

The Aussie wants to beef up his attack following the departure of Harry Kane, and Richarlison is yet to find the back of net this term.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will pay Forest’s asking price but they have £86m from the sale of Kane.

Marcos Alonso wants to stay at Barcelona (Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images)

Barcelona full-back Marcos Alonso has ‘no intention’ of leaving the club and is not interested in joining Manchester United.

The Spaniard, 32, has been shortlisted as an option by United to solve their crisis at left-back.

Luke Shaw is set to miss up to two months of action with a muscular injury, while Tyrell Malacia is currently sidelined.

Diogo Dalot deputised against Nottingham Forest but the Portuguese and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are now the only recognised and available full-backs to Erik ten Hag.

That’s led United to scour the market for emergency options, and Marc Cucurella and Sergio Reguillon have been considered.

Alonso has been shortlisted as another option, given Barcelona’s desperate need to raise funds.

But ESPN say the Spaniard has no interest in joining United as he wants to remain at the Camp Nou.

Alonso has another year to run on his deal at the club and he would ideally like to sign an extension as he’s happy in Spain.

The defender starts for Barcelona against Villarreal on Sunday night.

Manchester United are also considering a move for Barcelona star Marcos Alonso as they seek to bring in an emergency option at left-back.

United hope to bring in a new left-back before next week’s transfer deadline after losing Luke Shaw to injury. The England international is expected to be out until November with Tyrell Malacia also still sidelined.

Inquiries have been made over the availability of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Sergio Reguilon of Tottenham but according to the Daily Telegraph, United have also asked about Alonso.

The 32-year-old ended his six-year spell at Chelsea last summer to join Barcelona, starting 11 La Liga matches in their title-winning campaign last season.

19-year-old Alejandro Balde has also been preferred by Xavi in Barcelona’s opening two games of the new season.

United are also exploring a move for Cucurella, just a year on from his £60m move from Brighton.

The Spaniard endured a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge and has not featured under Mauricio Pochettino this term with Ben Chilwell the club’s first-choice option with Ian Maatsen in reserve with Levi Colwill also an option at left-back.

It remains to be seen however whether Chelsea will sanction a deal that could see them aid a direct rival for Champions League football.

Regulion is another option under consideration with Tottenham open to allowing the 26-year-old to leave the club.

United were interested in signing him back in 2020 when Spurs struck a £27m deal with Real Madrid. The left-back returned to Spain on loan last season, spending the season with Real Madrid.

With both Shaw and Malacia unavailable, Diogo Dalot shifted over to a left-back role as United came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Having also allowed Brandon Williams to join Ipswich on loan, viable options on the left are in short supply.

20-year-old Alvaro Fernandez was an unused substitute against Forest but will hope to force his way into the side after an impressive loan spell at Preston last season.
