Ecuador prison violence: At least 50 of guards taken hostage According to officials, more than 50 prison guards and seven police officers have been taken hostage in several jails in Ecuador. Two car bombs also went off in the capital Quito, both targeting the country’s prison authority (SNAI). There were no injuries from the bombings and at least six people have been arrested. Jet ski tourists shot dead off coast of Algeria Two tourists – holidaying in Morocco – have been shot dead by the Algerian coastguard, after they reportedly strayed into Algerian waters on their jet skis. The two tourists were among four French-Moroccan dual nationals who had set off from the Moroccan resort of Saidia.  A third member of the group was arrested by the coastguard which patrols the two states’ closed border. Proud Boys leader Joe Biggs sentenced to 17 years for Capitol riot Joe Biggs, 38 – a US Army vet and leader of the far-right Proud Boys – has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in the 2021 US capitol riot.  Briggs has been identified as an instigator of the storming of Congress. He has been convicted of seditious conspiracy and other charges in May. In court, he pleaded for leniency and expressed remorse for his actions.
