Warning: spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 3 episode 2.
We’re only two weeks into The Mandalorian season 3, and the Star Wars series has already plunged Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu into a life-threatening situation on Mandalore.
In episode 2 on Disney Plus, the father-son duo set off for the former homeworld of the Mandalorians, after Din’s acquaintance Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) – who previously ruled the planet – refused to go with them.
Having first joined the cast of the TV show in season 2 when she and her comrades clashed with Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), Bo-Katan is forced to step in to save the day when Din is captured, making her the true MVP of the instalment.
Later, the trio pay a visit to the Living Waters in the mines of Mandalore, as Din seeks redemption so that he can be accepted back into his Mandalorian creed despite his transgression… and while there, they cross paths with the mythical and wondrous mythosaur.
Grogu reunites with his number one fan Peli Motto
Welcome back Peli! (Picture: Lucasfilm Ltd/Disney Plus)
While in search of a replacement memory circuit for the droid IG-11, Din turns to an old ally – Tatooine-based Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris), whose love for Grogu knows no bounds.
Although Peli is unable to help with his IG-11 query, she instead provides him with a different droid, R-5, to accompany him on his treacherous trip to Mandalore, the destroyed and dilapidated homeworld of the Mandalorians.
When the Child reunites with Peli, he leaps out of his dad’s N-1 starfighter straight into her arms, demonstrating how much progress he’s made with the Force since the last time he saw her.
The droid that Peli gives Din might be an astromech, but it’s clearly spooked by the idea of going to Mandalore… which begs the question of whether it’ll be able to carry out the job of scanning the land to ensure it’s safe and breathable to explore.
Touch down in Mandalore – aka a death trap

Just landing on Mandalore proves to be an extremely risky task, as Din flies through a terrifying storm in order to reach the ground below.
At first, it appears as though the land is completely scarce of life, until R-5 and Din encounter aggressive creatures, which the Mandalorian is able to defeat in hand-to-hand combat, while struggling to master the Darksaber.
As Din and Grogu travel down into an underground city, he comes across a Mandalorian helmet submerged in the dirt… before getting trapped in a metal cage by a menacing, robotic creature.
As Mando begins to have bodily fluids drained from him through the bars, he urges the Child to fetch Bo-Katan for help.

Bo-Katan swoops in to save the day

When Bo-Katan first spots Din’s starfighter land back on her castle grounds, she initially plans on telling him to leave him alone once and for all.
But when she realises that Grogu is on his own and Mando is in danger, she immediately springs into action, travelling back to Mandalore, the planet that her family used to rule.
Bo-Katan makes it to Din, grabbing his Darksaber from the ground to conquer the creature that’s keeping Mando captive.
Despite Din being in a weakened state, she reluctantly says she’ll escort him to the Living Waters in the mines of Mandalore, where he believes he can find redemption for betraying his creed by removing his helmet in public.
A first look at rumoured mythical creature the mythosaur

It’s long-been rumoured that a mythosaur – a mythical creature from the world of Star Wars – would show up in The Mandalorian, given its connection to Din’s ancestors.
The giant creature was even foreshadowed in the very first episode of the show, when Kuiil (Nick Nolte), an Ugnaught, was instructing Din on how to ride a Blurrg, saying to him: ‘You are a Mandalorian! Your ancestors rode the great Mythosaur. Surely you can ride this young foal.’
When Din and Bo-Katan arrive at the Living Waters, she reads out an inscription on the wall that explains how the mines date back to the age of the first Mandalore, which in ancient folklore was believed to be the lair of the mythosaur.
The Mandalore was said to have tamed the mythical beast, which subsequently resulted in the skulls signet being adopted as the symbol of the planet.
As Din enters the waters, saying an oath that he will always walk the way of the Mandalore, he’s suddenly dragged under the surface by an unknown force.
Bo-Katan dives after him and finds him at the very bottom of the body of water… and as she pulls a seemingly conscious Din back to the top, she passes an enormous creature, whose eye peers back at her.
It looks like the ancient mythosaur has arrived… so could we see Mando riding the legendary creature by the end of the season? Many fans certainly hope so!
When do new episodes of The Mandalorian come out?
