Australian man acquitted in British woman’s death during home break-in
An Australian man has been acquitted of murdering Emma Lovell, a British woman who was fatally stabbed during a Boxing Day break-in at her home near Brisbane in 2022. After a three-day trial, the judge concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove the man, who was 17 at the time, knew his co-accused was carrying a knife during the incident.
Lovell, a 41-year-old mother of two who had emigrated from Ipswich, UK, in 2011, died after confronting two intruders with her husband Lee, who was also injured in the attack. The second intruder, who admitted to the murder earlier this year, is serving a 14-year sentence.
While the acquitted man faced lesser convictions for burglary and assault, he was cleared of more serious charges, including manslaughter. The judge-only trial was conducted without a jury due to heightened tensions over youth crime in Queensland, where recent elections saw calls for tougher sentencing for juvenile offenders. The acquitted man remains in custody, awaiting a pre-sentence report in December.
