For the first time ever, the Grammys has a dedicated video game category, with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla taking the first win.
This year’s Grammy Awards was pretty significant for the games industry, since it marked the introduction of a Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media category.
While music from games has been nominated and even won Grammys before, the event now has a category specifically for the medium.
Its first winner was Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (or rather its Dawn Of Ragnarök expansion), with composer Stephanie Economou taking home the award, but the moment is already more famous for the host’s comical mispronunciation of the game’s name.
As seen in a clip shared online, presenter and comedian Randy Rainbow doesn’t seem to have ever seen the word valhalla in his life, apparently panicking and reading it as ‘valalha.’
So presumably he’s not much of a Led Zeppelin fan and has never watched a Thor movie.
No doubt he’s wishing one of the other nominees won, since their names would’ve been far less difficult to read out. Said nominees were Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Call Of Duty: Vanguard, Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, and Old World (we’ve never heard of it before either, it seems to be some sort of Civilization clone).
That list may seem a bit bizarre considering these were all games that came out in 2021, while Dawn Of Ragnarök launched in March 2022, but this year’s Grammys covers music from October 1, 2021, to September 30, 2022.

Economou didn’t seem to be bothered by the naming flub, though, using her acceptance speech to thank those who ‘fought tirelessly to bring this category of video game music into existence. Thank you for acknowledging and validating the power of game music.’
In a follow-up interview shared on the Grammys website, Economou adds that she’s ‘really honoured, especially because this is the first year this category exists. So, it’s big, it’s a big thing and I feel very validated by this community.’
