Former England and Arsenal captain Tony Adams has called for ‘plucky loser’ Gareth Southgate to be replaced as Three Lions boss, saying the national team needs a ‘serial winner around the place’.
Southgate’s future with England is in the balance after their World Cup quarter-final defeat to France on Saturday.
He remains under contract until 2024, but there remains the possibility that he will choose to walk away now, after his third major tournament, or the FA could choose to make a change.
Adams, who won 66 caps for England from 1987-2000, thinks a new man at the top is the right thing to do as he wants, what he sees as, a more intense winning mentality in the national team.
The 56-year-old thinks the reaction to the 2-1 defeat to France has been too accepting, and suggests why England were not able to win.
‘I’m fed up with us being plucky losers,’ Adams told The Sun. ‘After we lost to France all the talk was: “Well done England, jolly good defeat, keep your heads high”.

‘This is the mentality we have to change. ‘They’re all nice people in the England camp. Gareth Southgate’s lovely, Stevie Holland is wonderful, Chris Powell is a beautiful man.
‘But they need an experienced, serial winner around the place. Gareth doesn’t lack courage, he has tremendous courage. But he’s a good loser. It’s hard to say that but it’s the truth.’
The favourites to replace Southgate, if he does leave, are former Tottenham and PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino, ex-Chelsea and PSG manager Thomas Tuchel and the current Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.
