Paul Merson has named the signing that would turn Manchester United into Premier League title contenders next season.
United have bolstered Erik ten Hag’s squad this summer with the signings of England midfielder Mason Mount and Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Ten Hag is putting on Manchester United to sign a new striker, with the club prepared to spend around £60m on Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund.
But former Arsenal and England winger Merson believes Manchester United should be prioritising a deal for Tottenham captain Harry Kane.
Ten Hag is a known admirer of Kane but United seemingly withdraw their interest in the Spurs striker earlier in the transfer window as they did not expect Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to consider a summer sale.
Tottenham now look increasingly open to selling Kane if they receive a suitable offer, however, with Bayern Munich planning further talks to discuss a deal for the 29-year-old.
Given the speculation over Kane’s future, Merson reckons Manchester United should revive their interest in the England skipper and says he would immediately turn the Red Devils into title contenders.

While United largely impressed in Ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, they still finished 14 points adrift of Premier League champions and arch-rivals Manchester City.
Merson tweeted: ‘Man Utd need to get Kane… Get Kane [and they] will challenge for the Premier League. Don’t get Kane [and they are] fighting for a top-four spot.’
Speaking earlier this week, Ten Hag insisted Manchester United were making progress in their search for a new No. 9.

‘We make progress but we know how it works,’ the former Ajax boss said.
‘What I can say is we do everything in our power to get it done, for me, the earlier the better because we have to integrate him in the team, with the way of play.
‘In an ideal situation, he was already here but you do not always get ideal situations as a manager and you have to deal with the situation.’
