UK weather: Arctic blast blankets UK in ice and sleet, snow warnings in place
The UK Met Office has issued additional alerts stating that snow and ice will continue to affect numerous regions of the country on Wednesday, with frequent snow showers expected to cause further disruptions.
The national weather service warned that there is a possibility of power cuts, interruption of mobile phone coverage and rural communities becoming cut off in some areas of the north.
UK cold spell and travel disruptions
The cold spell has been attributed to a flow of cold air originating from the Arctic. The Met Office urged people to leave extra time for journeys to work or school due to the expected snow and ice.
“Snow and ice will affect some areas of the country on Wednesday morning, so it’s worth leaving extra time for your journey to work or school,” the Met Office tweeted.
The weather service also warned of potential travel disruptions on Wednesday and Thursday morning across parts of London and Northern Ireland.
The spokesperson for the Met Office stated that the cold overnight conditions would last throughout the week, with temperatures expected to drop to -4C in London, and about -6C in Birmingham and Belfast.
The yellow warning has been extended further north and across a larger part of southern England and East Anglia, with possible long delays and cancellations on bus, rail, and air travel services.
