Sunday Papers: Archie will never be a prince – Bercow joins Labour – Fight against more lockdowns
The Sunday papers front pages cover Tory MPs fighting against further lockdowns, Matt Hancock accused of failing to inform the PM about a major study into the effectiveness of vaccines and John Bercow joining the Labour party.
The tabloids cover plenty of royal news, including the Queen’s attendance at Royal Ascot, Princess Diana’s 60th birthday and how Prince Charles is planning to never make Archie a Prince.
The Sunday Express reports that more than 50 Tory MPs are fighting against further lockdowns being brought in by the government. The paper says the MPs are backing plans for there to be a requirement for legislation to be passed each time a lockdown is proposed in future.
The paper’s front splash features a picture of the Queen as she attended the final day of Royal Ascot. The paper also carries a picture of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, ahead of what would have been her 60th birthday.
The Sunday Telegraph says Matt Hancock failed to tell PM Boris Johnson about a study showing the effectiveness of vaccines, during a meeting to decide whether to extend restrictions in England. The paper says the rules could have been lifted on Monday had officials been aware of the findings.
But, a source tells the Telegraph that “equivalent data” to the study was shown to Boris Johnson at the meeting.
The paper’s main picture is of the Queen at Ascot. The paper notes she received a warm welcome.
The Observer carries the news that John Bercow has joined the Labour party. The former Tory MP and Commons speaker uses an interview with the paper to make the announcement. The Observer says Bercow delivered an “extraordinary broadside” against the PM and the Tories.
The Sunday Times says Downing Street and the Treasury are at loggerheads over the prime minister’s multi-million-pound spending pledges. The paper says Treasury officials are examining plans to suspend guaranteed state pension increases, and ministers fear the Tory manifesto pledge not to raise taxes will become strained.
The Sunday Mirror reports claims about a text message exchange between former England footballer Michael Owen and a reality TV star.
The paper’s front page features an image of the murdered British mother, whose friend says her killer husband is ‘cold blooded’.

Matt Hancock kept Boris in the dark
The Sunday Telegraph says Health Secretary Matt Hancock failed to tell the prime minister about a major study showing the effectiveness of vaccines against the Delta variant at last Sunday’s meeting which was called to decide on whether to extend restrictions in England.
The paper says the disclosure raises the possibility minister could have stuck to the original date to lift restrictions instead of extending the lockdown, if they had been aware of the study.
A Department of Health spokesman tells the paper that information provided by PHE was shared across the government before the meeting.
No 10 at loggerheads
The Sunday Times says Downing Street and the Treasury are at loggerheads over tax and public spending, as the PM keeps announcing plans but there is no means to pay for them.
The paper says cabinet ministers are worried the PM and chancellor are on a collision course as the government faces huge bills for Covid recovery, the Whitehall spending review and green pledges.
John Bercow joins Labour
The Observer leads with former Tory MP and Commons speaker John Bercow quitting the conservatives and joining Labour. The paper says the move marks the latest stage in an extraordinary political odyssey for Bercow, who joined the Tories when he was 17.
Archie will never be a prince
The Mail on Sunday claims Prince Charles is to ensure Archie is never a prince.
It says Prince Charles has made it clear to Harry and Meghan there is no place for Archie among front-line royals as he plans to slim down the monarchy when he becomes King.
