Apple pauses AI News alerts after criticism over errors
Apple has halted its AI-powered news alerts feature following widespread criticism and complaints about repeated inaccuracies in summarizing news headlines.
The service, which delivered notifications that seemed to originate directly from news organizations’ apps, had faced growing backlash over its reliability and potential to spread misinformation.
“We are working on improvements and will make them available in a future software update,” an Apple spokesperson said.
Journalists, media outlets, and press advocacy groups had urged Apple to reconsider the feature’s deployment, arguing that it was premature and exacerbating existing issues of misinformation and declining trust in news sources.
Previously, Apple had committed to releasing a software update to make the AI’s role in generating summaries more transparent. The summaries were optional and only accessible to users of the latest iPhone models.
With this latest move, Apple has fully disabled the feature for news and entertainment apps until further improvements are implemented.
