Anjem Choudary charged with three terror offences
Anjem Choudary has been charged with three terror offences, the Met Police said.
The radical London-based preacher is accused of membership of a proscribed organisation, addressing meetings to encourage support for a proscribed organisation and directing a terrorist organisation, contrary to section 56 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
Choudary,56, was arrested last week. A 28-year-old Canadian national was charged on Monday with membership of a proscribed organisation. The man was detained last week at Heathrow Airport after arriving in the UK.
The arrests were carried out on 17 July by Met counter-terrorism cops.
Choudary was arrested in east London and charged on Sunday, the force said. Both men were held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
Both men are being held in custody and are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later on Monday.
