Angela Bassett has proved that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is, well, cinema after all after winning a major Golden Globe award – and making history in the process.
The Waiting To Exhale actress scooped the prize for best supporting actress in a motion picture for her powerful performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, in which she reprised her role as Queen Ramonda.
Her win makes Angela the first Marvel star to win a major acting award for a movie based on the comic books.
During her speech, the 64-year-old screen icon paid tribute to her late co-star, Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 after being diagnosed with colon cancer.
‘We embarked on this journey together with love. We mourned, we loved, we healed. We were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman,’ she told the audience.
‘We have joy in knowing that with this historic Black Panther series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like, behind and in front of the camera.’

‘To the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love,’ she concluded.
Celebrating Angela’s history-making feat, one fan declared: ‘Angela bassett being the first MCU actor to win a golden globe — and a major acting award — for their work in a marvel movie is the greatest thing to ever happen. We better be saying oscar winner angela bassett soon, i swear to god people.’
Another cheered: ‘Queen Angela Bassett winning awards for a Marvel performance is pleasing every single part of me. IT’S HER TIME!’

One quipped: ‘Angela Bassett absolutely deserves this honor – and her biceps also deserve their own golden globe, too. Just an absolute vision.’
Joining in the applause, a fan commented: ‘#AngelaBassett wins Best Supporting Actress!!!! March to the #Oscars baby! Huge win for #Marvel to get an acting award!’
Offering a touch of sarcasm, another said: ‘But the MCU isnt Cinema…..’
It was in reference to director Quentin Tarantino’s recent criticism of the MCU, in which he said: ‘Part of the Marvelisation of Hollywood is… you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars.
‘Captain America is the star, or Thor is the star. I think that’s been said a zillion times… but it’s these franchise characters that become a star.’
However, Marvel stars such as Samuel L Jackson and Simu Liu hit back at his comments and defended the talent across the blockbuster studio.
